Positioned on a long idyllic stretch of sandy beach overlooking the crystal clear waters of Lake Tanganyika, and below the magnificent Mahale Mountain range, this is a simple camp. Its name derives from 'Nkungwe', the highest peak in the Mahale Mountains range.
All 8 tents face Lake Tanganyika. Most are raised on wooden platforms to enhance the views. Furnishings are crafted locally. Each has twin or double beds and en-suite with hot shower and flush toilet. All are adequately spaced and private and have their own decks for relaxing and enjoying the lake views.
Excellent cuisine consists of English breakfasts, light lunches and 3 course dinners. Speciality dishes are the fish caught locally from the lake. Traditional African dishes are also served.
Nature walks in the National Park, chimp trekking and safaris, wildlife and nature safaris in nearby Katavi National Park, fishing expeditions, village and cultural visits, swimming in Lake Tanganyika are all on offer here.
8 double tents, one twin and one triple.
Reduced rate for children under 12, sharing, but cannot go chimp trekking.
Closed end-February to Mid-May.
Park fees and bar bills extra. Minimum stay three nights.
Electricity throughout the day. No mobile phone reception, but satellite phone and internet reception.
The large reception area on the beach also houses the dining room, lounge, bar, library and curio shop and is made out of local wood with a thatched roof.
There is a relaxation hut with reclining chairs for a siesta or for watching the sunset over the lake.
The beach also has cushioned lounge beds (locally made) to relax on.
