Gombe Forest Lodge is situated on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. It has been designed with comfort in mind whilst minimising the disturbance and impact on the stunning environment. This camp is well hidden amongst the trees along the lake shore.
There are 7 spacious tents set on wooden platforms and shaded by huge mango trees along the edge of the lake. Each tent has en-suite facilities with glassed in shower, basin, flush toilet and hot and cold water throughout the day. There is an open clothes cupboard, lockable chest, mosquito nets and electricity. The roofed porch in front of the tents has table and chairs, an inviting place to sit in the heat of the day.
There is a comfortable lounge and a dining area just a few steps from the beach. Meals are served in the dining room or on the beach. There are sun loungers and umbrellas on the beach and a small jetty to the lake.
Chimpanzee trekking, swimming in the lake, fishing, boat safaris, kayaking and snorkelling are all available at the lodge, or you can also visit the nearby waterfalls on foot.
5 double and 2 twin tents
No children under 12 on chimpanzee trekking
Closed 15th February to 15th May
Drinks additional, together with park fees ($100 per person per day)
Electricity (daytime). Mobile phone coverage.
Forest and waterfall walks, together with swimming in the lake. Boat safaris. The main activity is, of course, Chimpanzee Trekking, which involves a visit to the National Park, with its attendant park fees.
It is possible to combine a stay here with a similar stay at Gombe's sister lodge in the Mahale Mountains National Park - Kungwe Beach Lodge - giving a two-centre chimpanzee trekking experience. The latter probably has the edge over Gombe, although is harder to get to.
